Context of the Study
The influence of media coverage on clinical practices and patient behaviors has been a topic of interest, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite growing awareness of health-related news, limited research exists on the association between social media and such behaviors.
A notable article published in The New York Times on 18 August 2022 featured the experiences of several dermatologists and an observational analysis of females with alopecia who received oral minoxidil instead of topical application. This widespread coverage may have influenced prescribing patterns for oral minoxidil.
Study Methods
This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate changes in oral minoxidil prescribing after extensive media coverage using deidentified prescription data from electronic medical records in the United States Truveta data system.
The study included adults who received oral minoxidil between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2022. Participants were primarily from eight healthcare systems, residing in 13 US states, and received oral minoxidil for the first time either before (between January and July of 2022) or after (between August and December 2022) the news article publication.
Prescription rates for 2.50 milligrams and 5.0 milligrams tablets per week were calculated, excluding minoxidil 10.0 mg tablets used to manage hypertension. Interrupted-type time-series analysis was employed to examine weekly prescription trends using autoregressive and integrated moving averages modeling.
The study compared oral minoxidil effects to low-dosage finasteride medication for hair loss and antihypertensive drug prescriptions, as both belong to the same class of medications.
Findings
A total of 6,541 individuals were prescribed oral minoxidil for the first time. The demographic breakdown revealed a predominantly male population (41%), with 37% aged 45-64 years and diverse ethnicities, including Asians (8.0%), Blacks (13%), Whites (65%), and Hispanics (10%).
