A recent presentation at the Maui Derm meeting highlighted the potential of Janus kinase inhibitors in treating alopecia areata in children, despite concerns over their safety profile.

According to Dr. Sheila Friedlander, a pediatric dermatologist and professor emeritus at UC San Diego School of Medicine, alopecia areata is a condition that disproportionately affects children and can cause significant problems during childhood.

Janus kinase inhibitors, such as ruxolitinib and tofacitinib, have shown promise in treating alopecia areata in adults, but their use in children is limited due to concerns over safety.

No Janus kinase inhibitor is currently approved for the treatment of alopecia areata in children, although some medications like baracitinib have been studied in juvenile patients with other diseases.

Dr. Friedlander noted that while JAK inhibitors carry a boxed warning for major adverse cardiovascular events, more research is needed to fully understand their safety profile in children.

The use of topical JAK inhibitors may be one option where the risks are lower than with oral medications, but further studies are required to confirm this.

Dr. Friedlander emphasized the importance of considering alternative treatments for patients with alopecia areata, as there is currently no FDA-approved medication for this condition.
